OXBRIDGE Oxbridge designa conjuntamente las universidades de Oxford y Cambridge, las más antiguas y prestigiosas de Inglaterra. Aparte de éstas, hasta el s. XIX las universidades que había en las Islas Británicas se hallaban en Escocia y Dublín. Hoy en día Oxford tiene cuarenta colegios universitarios y Cambridge treinta y uno; este curioso sistema de agrupación de colegios universitarios las distingue de las demás universidades británicas. Hasta hace poco, un título de Oxbridge era prácticamente indispensable para quien aspirase a una posición prominente entre la clase dirigente. Incluso al día de hoy, aunque otras universidades se encuentran a la par o incluso superan a Oxford y Cambridge en determinadas áreas académicas, Oxbridge continúa conservando ese prestigio mitad académico mitad social. Aunque ambas han realizado notables esfuerzos para captar estudiantes provenientes de la enseñanza pública, la verdad es que hoy por hoy la mitad de sus estudiantes vienen del sector privado, el cual, a su vez, reúne únicamente al 10 por ciento de los escolares británicos.
